Background - PM Actuators in MV Switchgear

IPEC Engineering have developed a number of unique technologies and products over the past nine years through a combination of commercial product development and supply projects and the company's close links with Manchester University. In this time IPEC Engineering have developed a new range of mechanisms for the operation of Medium Voltage Switchgear based around the Permanent Magnet Actuator.

IPEC Engineering's present Directors were part of Manchester University's Energy Systems Group which developed the first Permanent Magnetic Actuator for operating a MV Vacuum Circuit Breaker back in 1987 for a leading UK Switchgear Manufacturer. This innovative design has led to a minor revolution in the field of PM actuator design over the last decade to the present point where there are a number of commercially available systems in the marketplace. IPEC Engineering find themselves in a unique position in the MV Switchgear market having developed a complete Permanent Magnetic Actuator design, manufacture and supply service (supported by IPEC Engineering's Proprietary MAGACT© Software). IPEC Engineering offer 'off-the-shelf' PM Actuators and Complementary Electronic Controllers. Both technologies are component parts of the new generation of actuator-driven MV Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCBs) which are set to displace the conventional motor-wound spring mechanisms due to their significantly increased reliability and functionality. The growth in the use of Permanent Magnetic Actuators in MV VCBs is expected to increase exponentially as the technology becomes more widely available. This growth is expected to mirror the growth in the use of Vacuum Bottles which has occurred over the last 30 years from 1% of the market in the early 1970's to around 80% today.

It should however be noted that with the top end performance products, such as outdoor autoreclosers, Permanent Magnetic Actuators have been in use for over a decade, and are now becoming the dominant technology in the marketplace. Recent market trends show that PM Actuators are now being used to control and drive indoor VCBs. Due to the very high reliability and low number of component parts within it the PM Actuator is a truly maintenance-free unit and is, as a result, now being incorporated in fixed pattern, indoor VCBs.
